Ironically, even though it’s mostly used by builders, the jackhammer’s main purpose is destroying and drilling (concrete and pavement, among other things). Typically, jackhammers are powered by gas, liquid or electricity and they’re a fusion of a chisel and hammer. Pneumatic Jackhammer
As is the case with all pneumatic tools, this type of jackhammers requires a portable air compressor for power. They aren’t the cheapest and most practical option, which makes them the most unpopular option out of the three types.
Electric Jackhammer
This type is dependent on an external power source in order to work (but not a compressor). They’re typically used in places where access to a compressor is not possible, unsafe or limited, like inside buildings, for instance. They’re best suited for smaller construction projects and indoor use.
Hydraulic Jackhammer
These jackhammers are typically the largest and most commonly used one by construction workers, miners, excavation workers and other industrial settings. The more advanced models have portable breakers which have the drill connected to a hydraulic hose. Their efficiency and power is greater than the other two types, yet they still come at relatively affordable prices.
Regardless of what type of jackhammer you’re using, you need a chisel or a bit integrated with it. There are several common types, including: a spade, flat tip, scrabbler, flex chisel, brushing tool or a stake driver. All these are interchangeable and serve a different purpose, making the jackhammer one of the most versatile and popular tools among builders.
There are a lot of safety concerns regarding the use of these tools. They should always be handled properly to avoid injury. It’s crucial that all users follow the safety precautions which include: wearing protective clothing such as gloves, eye and ear protectors and steel toe boots; store it safely; don’t use it for long time periods (have frequent rests); use the right bit/chisel for the job you’re doing; use water compression as much as you can and check for dust; thoroughly inspect it before using; place the electric cords over your shoulder to avoid swerving and electrocution, etc.
