Types of Camping Beds: Get Your Z’s as You Please

When it comes to camping there is no doubt that a good night’s sleep starts with having the right type of mattress. Speaking from personal experience, having little to no sleep when camping can turn into a real nightmare especially if you plan on having some interesting activities the next day like exploring the place or hiking. Now, let me get something out of chest from the very start – you can right here and right now forget about all the “dreamy” commercials that try to convince you how precisely this product is ideal for everyone. The truth is that there is no such thing as ‘fit for everyone’ product because we are all different, so if a sleeping bag, for example, works for me, it might not work for you. It is safe to say that the golden rule is the more you read the more you know (the more you try, in my case, as I tried a lot of types of camping beds). That being said, keep reading if you want to narrow down your choices.

Air Camping Mattresses

When thinking about camping and comfiness, it is inevitable not to mention airbeds. Air mattresses are the ideal solution for those of you who have trouble sleeping when camping as they are pretty similar to the mattresses we have at our homes. Except for being comfy, they are also lightweight, easy to fold and pack, but most importantly – they are affordable. Made out of high-quality material, these beds also have a special construction that allows the bed to keep its shape and stay firm throughout the night. All in all, airbeds are a durable sleeping solution when camping and extremely easy to inflate and deflate. You can choose from different thicknesses and sizes and the good news is that even if you choose the thickest one, you can still pack it in a way that fits and carry it in your backpack.

Closed-Foam Camping Mattress

Closed-foam camping mattresses are nothing more than the light blue foam pads people use when traveling. They are the most basic type of backpacking mattress that is lightweight and extremely affordable, but their main downside is that they cannot provide you with the needed comfort. They might serve you when camping on a smoother terrain, otherwise, you are risking feeling like a zombie due to lack of sleep.

Self-Inflating Camping Mattresses

Last but not least, self-inflating mattresses are another camping bed option that is similar to air mattresses, the only difference being that the former ones are smaller, not that thick and less expensive. They are ideal for any type of camping, even for car camping because are way smaller than air beds. They are available in a range of sizes, widths and thicknesses which will ease your decision making.
