Growing up, I used to have the dream of becoming a ballerina. There was a time I’d invent a dance of my own or start imitating the prima ballerinas I’d see on TV. My parents enjoyed my shows, I loved the attention I was getting, so logically I kept insisting on ballet lessons.
I still remember the first day at the ballet studio vividly, my mum taking me there, carrying my cute equipment. Instead of being afraid of the challenge like most girls there, I was all excited and couldn’t wait to start practicing.
It didn’t take me long to actually feel out of place as the practicing was getting tiring and others were excelling, so in a way my dream ended before it even began.
While I didn’t become a prima ballerina, I still love all-things ballet, and of course, I’m all up for the ballerina fashion trend. You have to admit, it’s quite the compensation!
I’ve worn ballet flats with just about anything, even at weddings and date nights, as my comfy backups for high heels but my latest favourite are tulle skirts. Much to my surprise, it’s easy to buy tutu for adults because of how wide the range is.
All I had to do was look up at the selection of specialised dance stores and go on shopping spree. What I love about the trend is how easy it is to combine it with other styles, and it works for any occasion, including work!
If Carrie Bradshaw could pull it off, why can’t I!? I’ve already worn my tutu skirts in the office, and ended up inspiring a few of my coworkers to have their share of the ballerina trend.
I think primarily it’s the elegance of ballerinas that drew me in, showing off gracefulness with every step and movement they make, so that’s what I want to get from wearing ballerina outfits.
What began with wanting to only buy tutu for adults continued with extending the collection in my closet with wrap tops, waterfall blazers and floaty skirts. Every piece is flattering and can be used for casual as well as formal events.
Sometimes, to spice it up, I wear them with a black leather jacket and sneakers for my daily walks, then for date nights I put the high heels on, and choose a more elegant bag – usually it’s my clutch.
In other words, anything that gives my outfits the lively flouncy look, and the final touch is always a bun; it’s quick and effortless to do, can save you from bad hair days and on top of that, it’s sophisticated.
To make a statement, I count on the help of jewellery too, and you needn’t ask on the style, it’s ballet inspired!
