Makeup has the power to make any woman look pretty and attractive. But mastering makeup isn’t exactly easy. For a more elegant and festive event, such as a wedding, you can put your trust into the hands of a professional makeup artist, but your everyday makeup look is your job. And often, women are confused about what products to use and how much makeup they should put on.
There’s a thin line between “just perfect” and “too much”. However, you can make sure you don’t cross it by sticking to only a limited number of makeup products for your everyday look. That being said, here’s a list of the essentials to keep in your makeup bag.
Face Primer
You might think that a primer isn’t that necessary, but it’s actually a vital step in the makeup routine. Its main purpose is to keep your skin looking smooth, minimise pores, balance your tone and keep your makeup looking fresh all day long. You will see a significant difference between applying and not applying a primer before you put your makeup on.
Depending on your skin type and specific condition, you can choose a suitable primer, whether it’s to control oil, acne, moisturise, smooth out uneven texture, colour correct, etc.
Foundation
Foundation is a personal choice, depending mostly on your age, your skin type and skin concerns. If you need to even out the skin tone and hide imperfections, you need to apply foundation right after the primer. By applying foundation, the skin complexion will look balanced and clear and all set for the next steps.
However, the foundation is considered to be the hardest part of the makeup routine to get right. In addition to considering the degree of coverage, which can be natural, medium, or full, you also need to put into account your type of skin and undertones. Hence, if you are a beginner at this, you may need to undergo trial-and-error in order to find the product that works for you.
Lipstick
No makeup look is complete without lipstick, even an everyday one. There is a plethora of lipsticks to choose from. You can experiment with a glossy formula, a lip balm for a softer look, or a matte formula for a glamorous look. You can also go for a liquid formula for more precision or for a bullet lipstick if you’re in a hurry and want to add a simple pop of colour. Even if you are vegan and use only vegan makeup products, there are cruelty-free and vegan lipsticks adequate for you.
Since the range of lipstick colours is so diverse, it may be quite a task to figure out what shade you should opt for based on the occasion. One of the most commonly used lipstick shades for a day look is nude since it adds a natural touch. It works perfectly for office hours. Red lipstick can also be a good choice, as long as you know how to pull it off. For instance, avoid matching it with strong eye makeup.
Colours like pink and coral that closely resemble natural lip colour have no rules and you can wear them anytime and in combination with any makeup. They are suitable for work, parties, weddings, church, classes and anywhere. Very often, when ladies are done with their makeup and are not sure what colours of lipstick to put on, they mostly go for these two shades.
Mascara
Mascara has a magical way of accentuating your eyes. It comes in numerous different formulas that lengthen, thicken, and curl the eyelashes. Before applying mascara, you can use a good lash curler to raise your eyelashes. Used in combination, these two steps will make you look more awake and youthful in only a few seconds.
The most frequent colour of mascara is black, and that’s fine for most people. However, if you have very light-coloured lashes, you may want to look into getting a brown mascara instead for a more natural effect. Other than these two shades, you can also find colourful mascara, but this isn’t a good idea for a day look.
Eyeliner
Just like the mascara, the eyeliner adds the little extra something to really make your eyes stand out. Black is considered the go-to option as well, but if you have lighter skin, you may want to try brown or dark grey eyeliner. You can also go for other shades such as navy or dark green. There are many different ways to apply eyeliner, and the right one will depend on the shape of your eyes.
Blush
This is another makeup item that shouldn’t be left out of your everyday makeup routine. It really adds the finishing touch in making you look fresh, healthy and radiant. Blush may come in powder, gel and cream form, with powder being the most popular option. There are various colour tones of blush. When selecting blush colour, always pick something that will give you a natural flush.
You should be careful not to use too heavy a hand when applying, because you may end up looking a bit clownish. Usually, pink and peach tones work best on fair and medium-light skin, and mauve, purple and maroon shades work best on darker skin tones.
